Landlessness is becoming an increasingly common problem in some rural areas, as governments take over subsistence farmers' land for large-scale development projects. Micro-agriculture is another potential answer for food-insecure communities with limited capacity to grow their own foods. Oxfam is teaching these techniques to inhabitants of the Sahel region. It's not a widely disseminated tool yet, but I think it could have exciting potential, especially in developmentally hopeless situations (e.g. Sudanese refugee camps, perhaps).

Hey Farah. Great concept. I think it can be implemented in many different settings to provide healthier and fresher foods. Hopefully water isn't a limiting factor. Can micro-agriculture - properly practiced - provide enough subsistence and nutrients to overcome malnutrition?

Interesting article - thanks for sharing. This made me curious whether this sort of education program could be implemented in communities with undernourishment as a serious health problem. I agree with Lawrence - that water availability may be the limiting factor in expanding this sort of intervention. However, I think this sort of approach is important so as to assist communities in establishing self-sustainability, rather than "giving a man a fish."
I'd be curious to see if Oxfam promotes this approach elsewhere.
i agree with you guys, water will be the challenge. they talk about a "micro-irrigation" technique (aka a drop-by-drop method) that uses water efficiently, but in some places even that is inviable. but perhaps it can be combined with water-harvesting techniques (in places where it rains), donation water, and longer-term development projects. it's certainly not as immediate a solution as RUTF or food aid. thanks for the input!
